PRO-ACTIVE AND CRISIS ACTION IN PLANT RELIABILITY MANAGEMENT

Predictive maintenence. Preventative maintenence. Building/Facility and Equipment Diagnostics.

When it comes to Plant Reliability Management, most plant managers inevitably fall into one of two categories. There are those that are determined to be the best that they can be. These tend to be very pro-active. And, there are those that are forced to react to a crisis. This is a more reactive approach.

In large part, the majority of maintenance reliability is the result of a crisis. There are two significant reasons why this is the case. Most organizations focus on short term objectives. Secondly, most managers are simply used to handling plant investments and reliability reactively.

As many plant managers will attest, most companies do not address plant reliability as a strategic function. There are a few companies which do, but they are the exception. It can be staggering to think that when responsible for millions of dollars of equipment assets most companies will not have a pro-active reliability program in place.

When a company depends on equipment assets to convert raw materials into finished goods it becomes all the more important to have a good handle on these assets. Once procured, the maintenance and operation of equipment to it's optimal levels should be a primary objective. It makes sense that a pro-active approach to reliability would be a part of that objective. Yet, oftentimes, this is not the case.

The reality is that most plant managers have little or no problem acquiring what they need when a system or facility fails. The need is immediate. The losses are apparent and unquestioned. However, most plant managers will have a hard time proposing a pro-active program which would help avoid the likelihood of such an occurrence or would explain why it occurred.

No one would intentionally compromise plant reliability. However, investment and budget concerns often play a part in the decision making process. Short term expenses are usually what most companies and businesses look at, whether it's part of an investment strategy or a maintenance line item. Few organizations are able to aspire to excellence in plant reliability management - it is a "tough sale" when viewed solely as a short term expense and an "expense" which may show no immediate return. The objective is usually to achieve the optimal output with a facility (in the shortest amount of time), rather than invest in the ability to extend that capability to insure the long-term predictive operations and maintenance.

For most managers, risk is determined by the probability of occurrence. Risk becomes a matter of weighing potential gain to potential loss. Most often, this is determined as a matter of weighing short-term expense to long term expectations. This can play into a companies maintenance program in a variety of ways. Essentially, if the short-term risks are minimal, a reliability maintenance program will reflect it's expenditures accordingly. However, if the short-term risks are considerable, this may have a immediate influence on reliability management practices.

A well-planned reliability program actually absorbs and distributes the risk factors and expenses of long-term (and short-term) maintenance. It leads to higher and more profitable productivity and can help to eliminate crisis situations.
